Janet Rachel is an experienced Human Resources and Diversity professional who has dedicated her career to working with organizations to create and manage a diverse and inclusive work culture and community. Janet currently serves as the Talent Operations Program Manager for Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she develops and implements strategies to attract and retain diverse talent, and serves as manager and coach for programs supporting career transition, relocation and internships. Janet also serves on the HR Diversity and Inclusion Council and the VUMC Executive Diversity Council. In addition, Janet is the Director for The Greater TN HERC (Higher Education Recruitment Consortium). Prior to this role Janet was the Talent Acquisition Manager for Vanderbilt University and Medical Center.

Prior to joining Vanderbilt, Janet held roles as Chief Human Resources Officer and Associate Vice President at Meharry Medical College, Sr. Manager of Global Diversity at Dell Computer and Compliance Services Manager for Metropolitan Nashville Human Relations Commission. Janet also founded Rachel Consulting Services providing diversity and mediation training and served as Coordinator for the State of Tennessee Economic Council for Women establishing their annual Summit for Women.

Janet’s professional career began with First American National Bank’s management training program after graduating with honors from Tennessee State University with a degree in Business Education. During her twenty-two year tenure with First American she progressed to Senior Vice President becoming the first African American female on the Executive Committee reporting to the CEO. Through the progression of roles as HR Manager, Corporate Employee Relations Manager, Workplace Diversity Manager, and Community Outreach Director, Janet impacted the advancement of diversity in the Nashville financial industry and the Nashville community.

A member of the Society of Human Resources Management, Janet has obtained the Recruiter Academy and Diversity Recruiter certifications. She is a former Rule 31 Mediator, certified mediation trainer and coach and former adjunct instructor for the American Institute of Banking. Janet has completed a Human Resources banking school at the University of Boulder, CO, numerous professional trainings and most recently the Civic Leadership Program at the Sue and Nelson Andrews Institute for Civic Leadership at Lipscomb University.

A frequent speaker, panelist and community advocate, Janet is a connector with a passion for coaching, mentoring and supporting youth, women, and the underserved. Recognized as a “Woman Making History in Tennessee” by the Tennessean, Janet has assisted with increasing diversity of several not for profit boards and received recognition for leadership and service from numerous organizations, including CABLE’s Power of Inclusion Award, INROADS Nashville Coordinator of the Year, Middle Tennessee Urban League Board Chair, CES Youth about Business Harriett Tubman Award, Nashville Urban Bankers Founder, a Nashville ATHENA Nomination from CABLE, The Nashville Black Chamber of Commerce Sponsor recognition and the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Nashville Metropolitan Chapter Leadership Award.

Janet is a member of Leadership Nashville and has served on the Nomination Committee, as Alumni class representative and Diversity Co-Chair. Janet served on Governor Bredesen’s transition team and was appointed Commission for the Metro Civil Service and Metro Human Relations Commissions by Mayor Purcell. She is a Past President of CABLE, Past Nashville ATHENA Chair, and a former board member of Bethlehem Center, the Women’s Council of the Community Foundation, United Way of Middle Tennessee, the YWCA and Fifty Forward.
