She earned a B.A. from Fisk University, and M.Ed. from the University of Minnesota, an Ed.S. and Ed.D. from Tennessee State University. She began her career in 1993, as the first and only African-American teacher in districts in Minnesota, and subsequently in Utah as well, before returning home to Nashville.
