Sonya was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. She holds a B.A. in Political Science from Jackson State University and a M.P.A. from Indiana State University in Public Administration. Sonya moved to Nashville in 1999 after completing an appointed term as a Mayor’s Fellow with the City of Indianapolis, Indiana. While residing in Nashville, she continued to work in the nonprofit sector with the Brentwood YMCA school-age program, then as a Community Organizer / Lobbyist and later accepted the position of Kindergarten Teacher in 2002 at Faith Christian Development Center.
